What is PPL UK?
PPL (Phonographic Performance Limited) is the UK's primary music licensing company and performance rights organization. In simple terms: whenever recorded music is broadcast on the radio, played on television, or broadcast in public venues (like nightclubs, retail stores, or pubs), it generates a specific type of royalty known as Neighbouring Rights.
Standard music distributors like DistroKid or TuneCore do not collect these royalties for you. If you are handling distribution on your own and you aren't registered directly with a PPL-equivalent society (and maintaining your metadata properly), your broadcast royalties fall into a void known as the Black Box. Eventually, that money is distributed to the major labels based on market share.
