Genre-Based Bass Sample Classification

All bass samples are not created equal. An 808-style sub that works perfectly in Trap will result in severe phase cancellation in a UK Garage mix. A reese bass engineered for DnB will completely crush a lo-fi hip-hop arrangement. What matters is understanding the spectral profile of each sample and choosing the correct category before dragging it into your session.

The 4-Category System

Category Frequency Range Optimal Use Case
Sub20-60HzHip-hop, Trap, Phonk
Low-Mid60-200HzHouse, Techno, Garage
Mid-Range200-500HzDnB, Dubstep (Growl/Reese)
Character500Hz+Textural, Ambient, Lo-fi

WBBT 5-Step Sample Processing Chain

1. Import the sample into your sampler (Ableton Simpler, Kontakt, or directly onto the audio timeline)
2. Apply a high-pass filter at 25Hz to clear out DC offset and subsonic rumble
3. Generate upper harmonics with gentle saturation (Decapitator, Saturn) to ensure phone speaker translation
4. Sidechain compress aggressively against your kick: 4:1 ratio, 10ms attack, 100ms release
5. Perform a mono check. If the bass disappears in mono, collapse the stereo image on everything below 120Hz
